The mission of the Pegasus Therapeutic Riding program is to provide the therapeutic benefits of horseback riding and other equine-assisted activities to physically, emotionally, and developmentally challenged individuals at facilities and stables in the states of Connecticut and New York.

Our NARHA-certified instructors and physical and occupational therapists provide equine-assisted activities and therapies to more than 200 individuals with physical, emotional and developmental disabilities each year. Students are currently accepted as young as four years old. While the majority of our riders are under the age of 18, we also serve adults with special needs, including senior citizens.

Pegasus offers both a therapeutic riding program and an equine learning and barn education program. Therapeutic riding exercises both “mind and muscle,” producing remarkably improved mobility, balance, posture, coordination, language development, behavior control and concentration. Lessons include instruction in basic riding skills as well as opportunities for social interaction, recreation, sport, therapy, and work with basic developmental concepts, such as up/down, left/right and fast/slow.

The goals of the equine learning and barn education program are to foster social interaction among students and between the students and horses, teach responsibility and accountability, and provide opportunities for learning valuable life and job skills. The equine learning and barn program includes general horse care, horse usage, horse health care, landscaping, pasture and covered outdoor arena maintenance, and stable management.

These activities take place at Pegasus Farm, 310 Peach Lake Road, Brewster, NY 10509 and at five other chapters in Fairfield and Westchester counties.
